SUPERNOVA  – 2018

Badminton horse trials 2018  – Jess & I admired a wire sculpture outside the members tent. I thought “I could have a go at that” and I did. Supernova was the result of my first Twist.

The initial shape twisted from spheres and tubes was  overlaid with multiple patches of wire to add detail and body. The mane and forelock were made from appx 13 meters of  wire strands individually twisted onto the neck.

Many happy hours were spent examining the structure of Mattie’s head at the yard measuring up with my hands and transferring them into the wire form.

The base was a challenge not least for Martin! The idea was to have a concrete plinth, the head mounted using reinforcing rods – easier said than done!

Several attempts, many bags of concrete later, including an impression of the mountain from Close Encounters spewing over the kitchen floor, concrete was abandoned!

I struck on the idea of gabion’s and 6 bags of pebbles later the mount was completed. And yes it IS extremely heavy!

One day should Jess decide to have her own veterinary practice I hope he will stand proudly in the reception, until then he continues to make a statement in our living room at home.
