Archie the Miniature Schnauzer

We moved to Herefordshire just before Christmas in 2020 and in the late autumn of 2021 we got a small fluffy addition to our family, a miniature Schnauzer, Archie.

It soon became apparent that twisting wasn’t going to be as simple as it was and that I needed a space where I could leave work in progress and other materials out with no risk of being chewed or worse, by our little bundle of joy!

Our new home fortunately had a double garage, the perfect space to annexe part of for a studio. My ever patient and brilliant husband , Martin, bravely said he would take on the project!

He set to with a hammer and demolished the existing internal garage wall and replaced it with a fully insulated partition wall. Lighting was reconfigured, complete with retro switch and galvanised trunking, and a new screed floor laid ready for wood effect laminate.

After some research, he sourced scaffolding planks and poles to construct shelving which looks amazing and perfect for all my bits and bobs!

My work bench was donated by my Mum. Previously her kitchen table, it is a very heavy oak topped industrial style piece bought from a local reclamation yard several years ago. Luckily for me it doesn’t  suit the style of her present home but looks great in the studio!

A large painting that I did many years ago for our large Victorian hallway which we had no space for in our new home with its beams and low ceilings, is now hung on one wall and an Indian type box houses small pieces of memorabilia on another.

Martin being Martin ensured that the Wi-Fi was connected and Alexa is up and running of course. I can even turn the heating on from the main house so come wintertime the studio can be warmed in advance for when I want to twist!

The studio has a lovely outlook with a view to open fields and access to the back garden for Archie. We’ve made a start on making this little courtyard a nice place to sit and relax with a herb trough and the hedge adjacent to the field full of birds and bird song.

A couple more reclamation yard finds and a few coats of white paint the space looks fabulous. It’s a really nice space to work in and I’m very lucky. As for Archie he loves it in there too and sleeps peacefully in the sunshine whilst I’m twisting . Happy days!
